What Type of Car to Rent in Mongolia?

If you plan to venture outside of the city (as is often the case with tourists), you will need a reliable car with all-wheel drive capabilities. The roads in Mongolia may not be in the best condition, so choosing a quality car is essential. For example, a Toyota Landcruiser 76/79 or a UAZ Patriot, known for their excellent off-road performance, would be a great choice.

International Driving Permit (IDP) in Mongolia

Do you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Mongolia? Yes, it is mandatory. Foreign drivers can operate a vehicle in Mongolia only if they have an IDP. Mongolia recognizes IDPs based on the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of November 1968. You can use your IDP in Mongolia for up to one year. Before using it, make sure that it has not expired.

If you plan to continue using your IDP in Mongolia after one year but it has not yet expired, you must return to your country of residence for at least three months.

It is worth noting that violations of traffic rules, including driving without an IDP, result in fines starting at $20 and may lead to criminal liability.
