Road trip in Croatia

The sun-drenched Adriatic coastline, the wind whipping your hair and the open road whispering tales of hidden treasures. Croatia, the shining Mediterranean pearl, is calling you, and the best way to answer its summons? A road trip on four wheels! So, let's start the engine and go over all the basics, from obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) to impeccable driving style.

International driving license - a ticket to free travel

Before you set off on your journey along Croatia's scenic roads, you need to make sure your documents are all right. If you are not a European Union (EU) citizen, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is your ticket to free travel. This official document is in addition to your driving licence. The procedure is simple: visit an International Drivers Association office, present a valid driving licence, your passport and a photograph will be taken on the spot. Armed with your international licence, you can safely travel on the roads of any country without restrictions.

How to rent a car in Croatia?

Renting a car in Croatia is not a difficult task, but a little knowledge and skill doesn't hurt. Here's what you need to get behind the wheel:

Age requirements: As a general rule, you must be at least 21 years old and have one year of driving experience.

Valid driving license: Along with your IDP, you must have a valid national driving license issued in your country.

Credit card for deposit: Car rental companies ask for an embossed credit card for a deposit.

Booking in advance: Make reservations in advance, especially during the peak tourist season.

Road traffic regulations in Croatia

Speed limits: 50 km/h in the city, 80 km/h in open areas, 130 km/h on motorways.

Seat belt: All front and rear passengers must wear a seat belt.

Drinking alcohol: Do not exceed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 per cent.ย

Phone-free zone: If your phone does not have a hands-free function, it is forbidden to use it.

After we have reminded you of the basic, but most important, rules of the road, here are some interesting rules on the roads in Croatia. Keep them in mind to avoid unexpected difficulties:

No headlights - no movement: Even during the day, you must keep your headlights on.

Visibility waistcoat: A reflective waistcoat is mandatory in the vehicle.

First aid kit: Carrying a first aid kit is a must in case of emergencies.

Toll roads and ticketing: Some motorways use a ticketing system, so keep your ticket with you until you leave the road.

Croatia offers its guests ancient cities, colourful culture and, of course, the atmosphere of Game of Thrones.
